Chassis Modifications & Chassis Repairs

Our specialised team at Chassis Mods have been carrying out custom made chassis modifications and axle conversions on commercial vehicles for over 20 years. We are striving to be the leading converter in this specialist field of vehicle engineering in Brisbane, Queensland.

The chassis is the backbone of a heavy vehicle and its main function is to carry the maximum load safely in a variety of operating conditions. It absorbs engine and driveline torque, accommodates twisting on uneven road surfaces and endures shock loading. To ensure a modified heavy vehicle chassis remains safe under all operating conditions, our modifications are subject to careful design and analysis.

When a chassis is modified, we conduct structural calculations to ensure the predicted stress in the chassis is not too high. We also use safety factors to ensure the chassis can withstand a stress at least 3 to 5 times higher than the stress predicted in the calculations.

Once the new chassis is completed, we will complete an engineer evaluation and issue a modification certificate though the Department of Transport and Main Roads in Queensland. We will also fit a modification plate.

Our Specialities include:

Truck Chassis Modifications & Conversions

Each chassis modification or chassis conversion job completed by Chassis Modifications is designed and completed on its own merit. Our more custom chassis conversions are designed using CAD (Computer Aided Design). We also use other inhouse engineering services when required. Most modifications do not require too much design, which enables us to keep our costs and timelines competitive.

Whatever your needs, our conversion will result in a solution that is right for you. Everything our team does meets OEM Standards, manufacturers specifications and sound engineering practice.

Truck Chassis Repairs

We repair truck chassis’, whether your truck chassis is cracked, has rust, damaged rails or has been twisted and distorted, we will repair it. We also have an experienced team who focus on chassis strengthening and straightening.  Once repaired your chassis can be sandblasted and painted on site to your company colours or requirements.

Having a dedicated team, quality products and competitive prices, ensures trucking companies and private operators alike, consistently put their trust in us for their chassis repairs. Please contact us to discuss your requirements in further detail. We look forward to having contact in the very near future.

Wheelbase Extensions & Reductions

We offer wheelbase extensions and reductions on all units from 4×2 up to 8×4 wheelbases.

When a wheelbase has been completed it will have the same integrity as the original chassis. Chassis Mods always aim to comply with and maintain the manufacturer’s original specifications and appearance.

However, if you need your truck to be lengthened, but the manufacturer does not have a model in their line up like it, we will not be able to assist you.

All our chassis’ can be sandblasted and painted on site to your company colours or requirements.

Prime Mover to Rigid & Rigid to Prime Mover Conversions

Our engineering team have over 20 years of experience in undertaking prime mover to rigid conversions and vice versa on a wide range of trucks.

The most common conversion is when the prime mover is converted into a long wheelbase chassis or drawbar prime mover. The benefit to you is a low mileage, high specification vehicle at a lower cost point.

A third axle can also be added. A 6×2 unit stretched with an additional axle will make an 8×2 rigid. We also fit additional tag, midlift and steer Axles.

Axle Conversions

As with all chassis modifications the main reasons why an additional trailing axle (tag axle), a leading third axle or an additional steering axle would be fitted is to increase the carrying capacity or to maintain legally compliant axle weights.

We can convert a 4×2 prime mover unit to a rigid 6×2 by fitting a mid lift axle or tag axle. We can also convert mid to tag axles on a 6×2/2, convert 6×2 to 4×2. And we can convert single to double drive axlesFitting new and used drum or disc axles.

Air Suspension Conversions

There are a few reasons for converting from steel or rubber suspension to air suspension. Such as, enabling a truck to carry bigger loads, the ability to raise or lower the chassis frame height or as part of a third axle conversion.

Conventional air suspension systems give a much better ride, reduce driver fatigue and cause less damage to sensitive loads.

They are also popular with state governments, freight forwarders and drivers as they cause less damage to road surfaces than steel spring suspensions and as a result road transport authority allow heavier loadings on air suspended vehicles.
